This was the reason why the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences agreed to the request expressed by the Organizing Committee under the chairmanship of Professor S. P. Franklin that the Proceedings of the Kanpur Conference should be published by the Publishing House ACADEMIA, similarly as were the two volumes of General Topology and its Relations to Modern Analysis and Algebra, Proceedings of the First and Second Prague Topological Symposia. The Board of Scientific Editors and Editors hope that the present book will be appreciated by numerous specialists in topology, algebra and analysis, desirous to get acquainted with new achievements in topology and its applications. At the same time, the wish to express their thanks to all authors for their contributions, to all reviewers for their devoted work and also to all those who helped in preparing these Proceedings of the Symposium. < Προηγούμενο Επόμενο >

H. C. Whitehead. Of course, this is false, as a glance at the books of Hilton and Wylie, Maunder, Munkres, and Schubert reveals. Still, the canard does reflect some truth. Too often one finds too much generality and too little attention to details. There are two types of obstacle for the student learning algebraic topology. The first is the formidable array of new techniques (e. g., most students know very little homological algebra); the second obstacle is that the basic defini tions have been so abstracted that their geometric or analytic origins have been obscured. I have tried to overcome these barriers. In the first instance, new definitions are introduced only when needed (e. g. , homology with coeffi cients and cohomology are deferred until after the Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms have been verified for the three homology theories we treat-singular, sim plicial, and cellular). Moreover, many exercises are given to help the reader assimilate material. In the second instance, important definitions are often accompanied by an informal discussion describing their origins (e. g., winding numbers are discussed before computing 1tl (Sl), Green's theorem occurs before defining homology, and differential forms appear before introducing cohomology). We assume that the reader has had a first course in point-set topology, but we do discuss quotient spaces, path connectedness, and function spaces," < Προηγούμενο Επόμενο >

  • THE THEORY OF ALGEBRAIC NUMBERS | Αίθρα

< Πίσω Harry Pollard - Harold G. Diamond THE THEORY OF ALGEBRAIC NUMBERS ISBN: 978-0-486-40454-7 Αρχική τιμή / Τελική τιμή € 19,00 € 15,00 (-21,05%) Σειρά: Αντικείμενο: Εκδόσεις: Σελίδες: Dover books on Mathematics Number Theory Dover Publications 190 Διαστάσεις: 13,5 x 21,5 Εξώφυλλο: Έκδοση: Μαλακό 3η Ημερομηνία έκδοσης: Ιανουάριος 1998 Γλώσσα: Αγγλικά Detailed proofs and clear-cut explanations provide an excellent introduction to the elementary components of classical algebraic number theory in this concise, well-written volume. The authors, a pair of noted mathematicians, start with a discussion of divisibility and proceed to examine Gaussian primes (their determination and role in Fermat's theorem); polynomials over a field (including the Eisenstein irreducibility criterion); algebraic number fields; bases (finite extensions, conjugates and discriminants, and the cyclotomic field); and algebraic integers and integral bases. After establishing a firm introductory foundation, the text explores the uses of arithmetic in algebraic number fields; the fundamental theorem of ideal theory and its consequences; ideal classes and class numbers; and the Fermat conjecture (concluding with discussions of Pythagorean triples, units in cyclotomic fields, and Kummer's theorem). In addition to a helpful list of symbols and an index, a set of carefully chosen problems appears at the end of each chapter to reinforce mathematics covered. Students and teachers of undergraduate mathematics courses will find this volume a first-rate introduction to algebraic number theory. Προηγούμενο Επόμενο

This includes the theories of metric spaces, compactness and lower semicontinuality, normed vector spaces, Hilbert spaces, ordered vector spaces, Banach algebras. etc. Thus, we consider the abstract theories themselves only in part and then indicate their roles in analysis by giving various applications. In this regard, many important applications have not been considered because they are too complicated to be treated in an introductory study." < Προηγούμενο Επόμενο >

It also contains a section on vector-valued measure spaces as well as numerous problems and examples. Chief among the salient features of the work is its overall unifying theme of topologies compatible with increasingly enriched algebraic structures. The book gradually deepens the reader’s appreciation of the rich interplay among diverse areas of mathematics. Each section begins with a brief summary of the important points to appear, and the theory unfolds smoothly through an abundance of relevant commentary and well-chosen examples. In addition, the remarks that follow most theorems and examples are replete with useful information, counterexamples, and other points worth noting. Finally, each section ends with a set of problems (more than 220, with several subparts in each). Largely self-contained and accessible to students with a background in elementary analysis, linear algebra, and point set topology, the book nevertheless covers a good deal of advanced material. However, because of its readability, leisurely pace, and highly illustrative contents, it is an ideal reference for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. < Προηγούμενο Επόμενο >

It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the fundamental group and with singular homology theory, including the Universal Coefficient and Kiinneth Theorems. Some acquaintance with manifolds and Poincare duality is desirable, but not essential. Anyone who has taught a course in algebraic topology is familiar with the fact that a formidable amount of technical machinery must be introduced and mastered before the simplest applications can be made. This phenomenon is also observable in the more advanced parts of the subject. I have attempted to short-circuit it by making maximal use of elementary methods. This approach entails a leisurely exposition in which brevity and perhaps elegance are sacrificed in favor of concreteness and ease of application. It is my hope that this approach will make homotopy theory accessible to workers in a wide range of other subjects-subjects in which its impact is beginning to be felt. It is a consequence of this approach that the order of development is to a certain extent historical. Indeed, if the order in which the results presented here does not strictly correspond to that in which they were discovered, it nevertheless does correspond to an order in which they might have been discovered had those of us who were working in the area been a little more perspicacious. < Προηγούμενο Επόμενο >
