"One concequence of finite mathematics becoming an integral part of applied mathematics is the recent resourgence of interest in matrices, as a subject both for research and for untergraduate courses. The basic course in matrix theory was greatly changed afrer World War II by shifting the emphasis to finite-dimentional linear transformations. Today ther is a growing feeling that both points of wiew are necessary. The aim of this book is to provide a unified treatment of matrix algebra coupled with an introduction to three of the most important modern applications of matrices.
