Από τον πρόλογο του βιβλίου:
"This book was written for an elementary course, whose only prerequisites are a sound knowledge of high school mathematics, a critical attitude, and a willingness to think about things. The subject matter is the language of mathematics, mathematical abstraction, and proof.
As teacher know, and students will admit, too many people have more trouble with mathematics than anybody deserves. Some of the trouble apparently stems from the fact that mathematicians seem to have their own language and their own way of looking at things. Certainly nobody can deny the existence of a problem of communication. This book is predicated on the idea that a discussion of language can help to give some appreciation of mathematics."
