Foreword by the late Ioannis P. Stathopoulos , ex-MP of Lakonia and ex-Deputy Minister of National Defence.
The purpose of this book is to retrieve from obscurity a very remarkable mathematician, Zinodorus (2nd century BC).
The book is divided into 4 chapters. Chapter 1 contains the minimal information that has survived about the life and work of Zenodorus , the father of the newest branch of mathematics, the "Calculus of Changes". This chapter also contains the paragraph "Isoperimetric problems", in order to inform the researcher about the subject of the lost work of Zenodorus entitled "On isoperimetric shapes". Little parts of this work have been saved from three sources, which are contained in the following chapters 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
It was considered necessary to emphasize in an independent section the influence of Zenodorus ' work on the mathematicians of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. A dominant position in this section is the beginning of a speech by the great Greek mathematician Constantinos Karatheodoris on "The beginnings of the Calculus of Changes". This speech was given in August 1936 in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA). The speaker considers Zinodorus as the founder of the "Calculus of Changes".
