Professor Emeritus of the University of Athens, Maro Papathanasiou, forewords.
Euclid 's "Elements" is a work which forms an elegant, harmonious whole and is couched in an impeccably pedagogical manner. It has set a record of editions all over the world (about 1900 editions) and thus comes second book, in terms of number of editions, after the Holy Bible. To date, absolutely no errors have been found in this beautiful book.
This first volume contains books a', b', c' and d' of the "Elements", which deal with Geometry. More specifically, the first book refers to the straight line, angles, triangles, squares and parallelograms. The second book contains theorems and applications of the Pythagorean theorem as well as applications of Geometry in Algebra. The third book refers to the circle, the only curved line found in the "Elements". The fourth book contains problems concerning a circle and a straight line, as well as the inscribing and describing in a circle regular polygons.
