This book is designed to present basic statical knowledge directly applicable in a variety of disciplines that share as a common element the study of humans and human behavior. It is aimed at students seeking their own introduction and understanding of applied statistics and at students or professional who must be able to read critically the literature in their field for its statistical content.

The presentation of materials includes examples from the literature of sociology, psychology, education, and the health sciences. The material covers basic descriptive and inferential statistics as well as a brief introduction to scientific methodology. Also included is a brief chapter on the evaluation of scientific work from a methodological and statistical point of view. We have kept the formal mathematical materials to a minimum.
