OPTIMIZING METHODS IN STATISTICS

An international conference on optimization in statistics was held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, December 20-22-1977. A first symposium of this type was held at The Ohio State University in 1971 and the proceeding were published by Academic Press. The purpose of the present conference was to bring active research workers together from all over the world to exchange ideas and to stimulate younger researchers in the application of optimizing techniques within statistics and related fields. The conference was held just after the biennial meetings of the International statistical Institute in Delhi. The topics covered included optimization in control theory, decision theory, stochastic models, statistical inference, survival and reliability studies, design of experiments, estimation, and applications. In addition to 32 invited papers, there were 25 contributed papers given at the conference.

This book consists of the invited papers presented at the conference. The second part of the proceedings, consisting of contributed papers, is being published separately by the Indian Institute of Technology Press under editorship of P. C. Jain. These volumes should be interest to statisticians, mathematicians, engineers, and other scientists in related disciplines. The participants included 50 statisticians.
